Ifrane's
souk is the place to go for the best prices on the greatest variety of fruits and vegetables. I don't go there every week, but I try to go at least once a month to stock up on produce.

A lot of people I know go there to get clothes, too. For at least the first year that I lived in Morocco, I was utterly overwhelmed by the prospect of trying to buy clothing at the souk. Imagine the piles of clothes at the biggest garage sale you've ever attended, and then multiply that by, say, 10. Spending hours digging through huge piles of (sometimes smelly) largely uncategorized clothing items never appealed to me. But lately, my friends Sarah and Sara have helped me to enjoy this simple and cheap weekend entertainment. On a nice, sunny day, it can be fun to stand across from a friend, going from one end of a table to the other, excavating and discussing an interesting array of clothing. Some of the clothing items are very worn, others are bizarre, but every once in a while, we find something nice or interesting enough to take home. The clothes are cheap enough that you don't have to worry about trying them on before purchasing them. If something doesn't fit, you can pass it on to someone else, use it for a craft project, or even just use it for rags.
Like I said, cheap and simple. That's my kind of fun.
Looking good! Is that how the local girls often dress too?
ReplyDeleteGood question, TTT! I think the jacket is the kind of thing that a lot of the University girls wear. They are generally affluent, modern, city girls. Many of them dress in a way that I characterize as very "European" (but more Spanish/French than, say, German). More traditional or rural women, however, almost overwhelmingly go out in djellabas, which they often wear over what we Westerners would categorize as pajamas.
ReplyDeletePajamas + djellaba = best attire EVER!
ReplyDeleteAnd eerily like the sweatpants and trenchcoat I just walked down to the market in.
NOLA, I don't know if you saw this when you were here, but sometimes old country ladies wear what we would call bathrobes when they're out and about. Love it!
DeleteI soooo have to move to Morocco!!
DeleteNice photo, JABS!! You've let your hair grow. I like it. :)
