A murder of crows, a clowder of cats...and a league of Arabs?

In the push to the end of the semester, I think I will have less time to post to my blog, so in the meantime I'll tell you what's distracting me from my homework at the moment:

Why does "Arab League" sound okay while "League of Arabs" sounds, well, kind of racist? (At the same time, "people of color" sounds okay but "colored people" is just, well, offensive, and it actually makes me cringe.)

  1. When I hear "People of Color" or "Colored People" I begin to wonder how the rest of humankind is classified pigmentwise. Are they supposed to be translucent?

  2. Citrine: Yeah, I know what you mean, but I have felt--as a "translucent" person--that I couldn't say anything. :)

But I still think "people of color" sounds BETTER than "colored people."
